“In the Guys’ series who invented everything and practically left nothing to the others, there’s God, Gutenberg, Elvis and Helmut Newton”.
This exceptional Artist is recognized as the photographic reference of all time. A brilliant forward-thinking, Helmut Newton expresses his reality perception quite freely, without complex nor taboos, outside the conventions or the criticisms. His work raises questions because it disturbs the “good taste” codes, always progressing between violence and eroticism, fantasy and provocation. A provocation and an attraction for the bad taste which he claims: “much more exciting”. His fashion photos, his nudes or his portraits always play with limits and a narrative intensity, always powerful, magnificent.
I think every photographer should feel obliged to visit his permanent exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. Installed in the real size of his photos, plunged into the Cathedral silence, we can get the real measure and the depth of the Master’s work.
